No power in a rental property: landlord checklist

Ask the tenant whether the whole property is off or just one circuit — this determines urgency.

Check if neighbours have power to rule out a supplier outage.

If only one circuit tripped, do not repeatedly reset the RCD without investigation — it indicates a fault.

For burning smell, sparking or heat at the consumer unit, treat as an emergency and isolate if safe.

Book a Gas Safe engineer separately if the issue involves a boiler interlock — do not assume electrical only.
